Is Free Software Ok to Use?

JMA Consulting

Is it a good idea to download free software (aka “freeware”)? The simple answer is “yes and no.” Reputable companies like Microsoft and Adobe offer free, extremely useful, applications. But if you download freeware from lesser-known sites, you may unwittingly access malware. So, before you download a free application, do your homework.

Install Antivirus Software

A robust antivirus application serves as your first line of defense against malware. Before you consider downloading any freeware, install antivirus software and keep it updated.

Use Official Websites

You find the safest freeware on official company websites. For example, to download and install Chrome on a Mac or PC, go to the Help Center at google.com/chrome to access the install instructions and links. Download the latest versions of Adobe Reader from the adobe.com site.

Check Message Boards

Make friends on message boards and forums. Read multiple posts from users who have experience with the application you want to download. Did the software serve them well or did they encounter spyware, adware, viruses, or other malware after downloading the product? What freeware sites (there are many) do users recommend? Check out Download Crew for app descriptions, including pros and cons, written by actual users.

Find Tested Freeware

Look for sites that test a free software product before making it available to the public.  Learn the background of each site offering freeware prior to downloading any of their applications. Go to Ninite as a respected source for freeware. Ninite offers a safe way to download several free applications for use on a Windows or PC machine. Ninite obtains freeware from official sites and checks to see if someone has tampered with the application.

Other popular sites for free software include Softpedia, MajorGeeks, and FileHorse. Mac users downloading freeware from the App Store have the comfort of knowing Apple verifies all its apps to ensure they are free of dangerous malware.

Talk with Professionals

It’s tempting to download a freeware product that might make your job easier. But before you download that app to your work computer, consult your company IT policy; your organization may restrict employees from downloading free software.
